Farmer’s Wife Quilt-Along: Block 34 (Fern)

22 Feb

Today I am a guest blogger for the Farmer’s Wife 1930’s Quilt along, brought you by Angie at Gnome Angel, The Fat Quarter Shop and Marti Mitchell.  If you would like to purchase the book, scroll to the bottom of this post for more information.  If you would like to join the 5000+ other quilters participating in the sew-along, click here.

Welcome to my blog!  I am hoping to take a bit of the fear out of Fern and THE DREADED “Y” SEAM.

Actually, I would barely call this a “Y” seam.  It’s more like a slightly bent straight seam.  It’s a perfect block to start with, if you have never sewn a “Y” seam before.

•••

First, paper-piece all of the templates.  We ALL know how to do that by this point in the sew-along, right?

Next, sew the E, F, G, H templates to the center square.  Do NOT sew into the seam allowances.  You will want to sew only along the black line, back-stitching at each end.

(You’ll notice that my G, H & I pieces have the papers attached.  On small pieces, I like to glue the fabric right to the paper, for added accuracy.)

Here is the block with the templates sewn only to the center:

Now it’s time for the fun to begin!  Gently pivot the “Y” seams and match them up together on one of the sides.  Stitch the seam, beginning with (and including) the outer seam allowance and stop when  you get to the inner seam allowance (do not sew into it).  Repeat for the remaining seams.

Ta-da!  That wasn’t do bad, was it?  Now all you need to do is sew the corners to the block center.

And, DONE!

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial.  Have fun sewing!

I have the book and am in a BOM from a local shop with no guidance. I have done block one. I’m not fond of paper piecing so was wondering what templates are required from Marti Mitchell for conversion? About to break down and buy them. Also, will I be able to participate in the sew along even after you finish and I am still doing block 2 and 3?

If you go to Marti’s website (link at top of the page), you will find her tutorials for each block, using her templates. They work wonderfully and I am still planning on finishing the rest of the quilt using them!
Angi at Gnome Angel (link at top of the page) is running the quilt-along and she has tips and tutorials for every block! If you go to her website you find everything you need to make the quilt!
      Have fun!

Thanks for this tutorial and also for the wonderful paper piecing instructions. Your blogs/instructions make sense to me.

    Thank you.
