The Modern Medallion Workbook Blog Hop + a Giveaway

24 May

The Modern Medallion Workbook by Janice Ryan and Beth Vassalo

Today is the last day for the Modern Medallion Workbook Blog Hop and I hope you have enjoyed hearing from the contributors and seeing each of the quilts!
Screen Shot 2015-05-25 at 8.34.54 AM The quilt I designed for the book is called “Migration Medallion”.  I wanted to create a medallion that was light, airy and had movement to it, so there is quite a lot of negative space and flying geese!

Screen Shot 2015-05-25 at 8.35.07 AM

The quilting was done by Angela Walters.  Isn’t it gorgeous?!  She really went all out with it and added so much more movement to the quilt.

One of my favorite sections of the the book are the coloring pages.  You can photocopy them and color them with pencils or markers, or you can scan them to your computer and use a paint program to play with the look of the quilts.

I had fun playing around with “Migration Medallion” and seeing what it would look like with a tighter color palette and darker background.  I think I know what my next project is!

Would you like to win a copy of The Modern Medallion Workbook? Comment below and I will pick one winner to be mailed a copy by C&T.  International winners will receive an e-copy of the book. I’m going to be traveling all summer, so I’d love it if you could suggest a hand-sewing/ embroidery project (pattern or book) I could take with me, if you know of one!

Contest will be open until Friday, May 29th at 9pm and the winner will be chosen randomly.

While you are waiting patiently to see if you have won, check out the previous stops in the hop and you can enter their giveaways also!

Any embroidery pattern by Meg Hawkey of Crabapple Hill Designs would be great as a summer project. She has easy designs as well as more challenging ones.

I love the idea of translating something as traditional as a Medallion Quilt into a Modern Quilt. I am just getting into Modern Quilting and trying to inspire others to do the same so this could be the way to go. For your travelling project how about ‘Millefiori Quilts’ by Willyne Hammerstein – all paper- pieced which I’m sure will keep you busy.

I love your Migration Medallion! (Not surprised to see geese in your quilt!) Embroidery is my favorite hand sewing project. Right now I’m doing Truly Scrumptious by Cinderberry Stitches. My last completed project was Aunt Bea’s Parlor by Judy Reynolds. If you want something simple (and free) try out Birdie Stitches by Corey Yoder. Thanks for the chance to win your awesome book.

Here’s my idea: Cut a bunch of 3″ or 4″ squares. Put them in a baggie to keep them nice. Cut out a bunch of hearts a bit smaller than your squares — cut them all alike or cut them freehand.Put them in another baggie. Whenever you have a bit of spare time, sew a heart onto a square with needle-turn applique. When you return home you’ll have enough appliqued squares to make a quilt or whatever else may suit your fancy.

I generally crochet when traveling. I make simple stocking caps which I donate to our homeless shelter. I like doing it because it’s fast and before I get tired of a project, I am done. Plus I can change yarn color and texture on a whim and when I have lots of little balls left I make a “scrap” hat so everything gets used. I am very intrigued by the medallion craze and want to try at least one. Thanks.

I have two favorite ‘carry around’ hand work projects. One is anything made with the English paper piecing technique – if you don’t like hexie designs, you can do something like Lucy Boston’s Patchwork of the Crosses. The other is hand embroidery – I love to play with color and combining stitches. Right now I am carrying around a mosaic tiled wool applique square onto which I am adding embroidered stitches as I feel inspired.

Thanks for the giveaway opportunity – this is a book every needleworker would love.

I love to take handwork with me when traveling – I think a good take along project is one that can be pulled out and set down quickly, requires as few tools as possible, and is already drafted. So maybe some hand applique that is already prepped or hand quilting a block or small quilt top. I also love to crochet and crochet projects are usually easy to take along if they aren’t large.
