Lone Star Bed Quilt

13 Nov

I dream of waking up and finding all my quilt tops quilted and bound.  I seriously need to spend a week on my mid-arm just quilting.  I love piecing, but sadly, the actual quilting scares me! I feel like I should be pushing myself to try something fancier than a meander, but I’m afraid I’ll ruin my quilt.   I keep moving on to the next project, rather than brave the mid-arm.

I pieced this quilt top a bit ago for my bed and it’s one of the larger quilts I have made measuring 74″ x 88″.  The fabric is Color:FULL by Jennifer Sampou and I love the saturated colors and large scale prints.  The scale is perfect for these giant Lone Star panels

Ever since I made my Scrappy Lone Star Tutorial, I’ve been wanting to make a bed-sized one. I decided to arrange the colors, rather than going scrappy and I also added 1″ sashing between each diamond.

I think my favorite part is the triangle border on each end.  I’m a bit obsessed with borders right now (and yes, there is a random thread in the photo.  I like to keep it real here.).

Hopefully I’ll have a finished quilt to show soon!

I absolutely love this quilt and am going ga-ga over the fabric!!!!! This would be the perfect quilt to do yourself, starting in one quadrant at a time and then maybe echo quilting the star. You can do it – and the more you do, the better you’ll get!

This is absolutely beautiful! Any chance there will be a pattern or tutorial? Especially for adding the sashing between the diamonds.
    Thanks for sharing!

If you’ve ever noticed ….. Denyse Schmidt quilts all her quilts the same……a “ribbon candy”/figure 8 type motif. I think it’s her “signature”/go-to pattern. If it works for her, a meander should/could be yours!!!!! Love that piecing!!!!!!! (The sashing really makes it ‘sharp’!!)

If you have a mid-arm, then I say just quilt it however you are comfortable. To me, while I enjoy that “rush” when the last piece is stitched together that’s nothing like the “rush” of the last stitch on hand-binding. I am one of those weird people who enjoy finishing projects! I sometimes thing quilters “quilt the heck” out of their quilts and the beautiful fabric gets lost in the finished project. So I agree with everyone else, make meandering your signature and just go for it!

I absolutely love this quilt Janice!! I’m just like you and am always afraid to mess up my quilts with the quilting, but I’m starting to get more courageous…practice really does help. And start with the quilts that don’t need to be “awesome” to try new things and work them out. I’ve also found that after a wash and tumble in the dryer, all texture looks pretty darn good 😉

I hear you on the scared part ! I don’t have a mid arm but would love one. I tend to stick with the meander too. Thing is I am REALLY good at that one! LOL Time for me to move on to something else to master I guess ! Your Lone Star is beautiful ! I would look great with some straight line walking foot quilting ! (That’s the other one I CAN actually do) Have a blessed day !

Can you give us instructions on how to add the sashing on this one? It’s gorgeous and I really want to make one like it. I’m afraid if I just start throwing in sashing it will not match up when it’s time to put the star together. I’m sure there’s some kind of mathematical geniusness going on here that eludes the mathematically challenged like me. 🙂 Thank you!

    Hi Janice ~

I am a new quilter, and am wanting to make a lone star quilt. I can’t seem to find any guidelines on how much fabric to buy. Any chance you remember how much fabric of each color you used for this pattern? Also, how large are the triangles in the border?

    Thanks!

Emma, I can help! I recently made this and with the sashing you only need about three 2.5 in strips in each color. I recommend purchasing 1/3 a yard of each just in case. That doesn’t include the border triangles though. I’m not sure about that. I bet if you used 1/2 yard you would have plenty!
