Oliver + S Art Museum Vest + Pants Pattern

6 Sep

Art-museum-pattern copy

I have adored Oliver + S patterns  ever since I made the Family Reunion Dress for Emmeline’s first birthday.  The patterns are simple, classic, designs, with beautiful details that really give a garment a professional look.  Sew Mama Sew asked for six bloggers to test three new Oliver + S patterns that are being released today and I jumped at the chance to have the opportunity to make one early.

I was sent the new Art Museum Vest + Pants pattern and I made a size 4 for Liam (who just turned 4 yesterday!).  Liam is tall and skinny and the fit was perfect.  It looks great on him now, but there is room for him to grow and keep wearing it all year.

IMG_5151

Picking fabric for a boy is tough!  I wanted something unique, without being too wild.   I ended up using Robert Kaufman’s Essex Yarn Dyed Linen in Denim for the vest front, along with a green plaid shirting fabric for the lining and back.

IMG_5195

The pants are a green fine wale corduroy from Michael Levine Fabrics.

IMG_5203

The pattern is very easy to follow and I love all the details, like welt pockets on vest and pants, faux fly, side pockets and belt loops.

IMG_5189

I have made many, many welt pockets (though it’s probably been 10 years!) and I found the Oliver + S technique to be the easiest I have ever done.  Don’t let them scare you.  Once you make your first welt pocket, you’ll be a pro!

IMG_5188

The cute belt on the back of the vest.

IMG_5207

I love the bias tape binding along the edge of the pant’s facing.  The great thing is that you can do all the beautiful details, or you can choose to make the garments simpler and quicker and just stick to the basics.

IMG_5215

The only thing I (accidentally) changed was adding a facing to the side pockets.  The pockets were supposed to be cut from the corduroy, but I didn’t realize that until I had sewn them in.  I just added a corduroy facing, so the plaid wouldn’t show.

IMG_5126

Little man was very excited about his new outfit and wanted to wear it all day.  It was 100 degrees out, so he will have to wait until Thanksgiving!

What a lucky guy … he looks adorable and, seriously, that outfit is so much nicer than anything from a store! We’ve been looking at old photos because my granddaughter is doing a school project on genealogy. Most of my clothes growing up were sewn by my mom and they’re beautiful. It’s wonderful that you can do this … nice job!

LOVE those pants! I am always very hesitant when it comes to boys patterns, as I have been caught out too many times with garments that look great, but the patterns are terrible!! I’m so glad that you tested these first!

Adorable! – Great tailoring! I used to sew for my little guys. I used to work for JoAnn Fabrics and did much garment sewing for the store and customers. Now I make quilts! You are bringing back some good memories and I am so happy to see garment sewing isn’t passe today!

Good thing there are songs that could somehow capture the emotions you’ve been awkwardly hiding for a long
time. released in 1990 a definitive anthem of the so-called Generation X and their struggle with love, life, youth, 21st century anxiety, and
the in-betweens. The good thing is there are several simple
steps that will make your long awaited karaoke nights stress-free.

This helps to control blood sugar and it’s
easier to burn calories from small, light meals. The reduction of calories
and the increase of exercise should be approached in increments not to exceed 5%
per week. Those are much healthier selections, and will give you what
you need Don’t just consume empty carbohydrates either (A LOT of white
    foods are like this).
