Weekender Bag Completed!

3 Apr

Amy Butler Weekender bag made from Ruby Star Sparkle

My Weekender Bag is finally completed!  It only took me about three weeks to finally sit down and hand sew the lining in.

If you haven’t seen this bag before, it is the Weekender Bag by Amy Butler.  I didn’t find it as difficult as I feared it would be, but I certainly won’t be making another one anytime soon (Though I wouldn’t mind making a quilted one in the future).

The fabric is from Melody Miller’s “Ruby Star Sparkle” line and the cording and straps are Michael Miller’s “Mirror Ball Dots” in clementine. I used a shade of red/orange Kona (don’t ask which one) for the lining.

Changes I made to the pattern:

1. added cording to the end pockets.
2. added purse feet to the bottom.
3. Straps are lengthened to 54″ long.
4. added a zippered pocket to the interior.
5. no template plastic in the bottom of the bag.

I went pretty much by the instructions when applying the interfacings and sewing it together.  I did not use binder clips or clover wonder clips when sewing the pieces together, just pins. I machine basted the cording on, then I pinned the sides and front together and machine basted them an 1/8″- 1/4″ from the edge. Then I went back and sewed the pieces together tight against the cording.

I am LOVING my bag and now I am trying to convince my husband to take me somewhere so I can use it!  For now, it is my special bag for carrying teaching material to class.

The bag is really cute! Though it appears to have been a lot of work, it sure looks professional. Your fabric choices are great. Is there anything you’d do differently if you made it again? Do you like the size of it? Would you recommend buying the pattern? Obviously, I’m thinking about it for myself. Thanks!

Totally love, so perfectly retro looking with the roller skate too! I don’t know if I am ready for another one myself, but it is a great size to carry…hmmm maybe I should make another now that I see yours 🙂
