Scrappy Trip Around the World: Finished!

14 Feb

IMG_4361

It is complete!  My Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt is done and currently in use on my couch (while I write this blog post, in fact!)

IMG_4351

It measures 70″x 80″ which is big in comparison to quilts I normally make and it fits on my queen-size bed, so it may live there part of the time.

The fabric was a fat quarter bundle of Anna Maria Horner’s Little Folks Voile that I purchased some time ago with plans to make a quilt for the living room. It is SO soft and snuggly and the kids love cuddling under it with me while we read books in the morning.

After having various trials and tribulations while machine quilting (which you can read about here), I ended up changing the batting back to my old standby (Warm & Natural).  I both machine and hand quilted, with a minimal amount of straight lines to retain the softness of the top.  I also found the spray baste to be more problematic than helpful with the slippery voile, so I ended up basting with straight pins and re-smoothing often.

The hand-quilting thread is Wonderfil Spagetti in Stormy Blue and Lichen.  I love, love, LOVE it and I managed to find some at one of my local quilt shops.

The back is Robert Kaufman Cambridge Lawn in Aqua and it is just as soft as the voile front. I used Anna Maria Horner’s “Innocent Crush” Mixed Signals in Striking for the binding.

The quilt washed very nicely (this photo is post washing).  I washed on delicate and dried on normal and it looks exactly the same post wash as it did pre-wash, minus a couple inches for shrinking.

This is so beautiful Janice. I loved it as a quilt top, but love it even more (who would have thought I could love it more!) now that it is complete! A Scrappy Trip Around the World is on my list this year, but AFTER I have finished my list of UFO’s!

    It’s beautiful Janice!

I used a Wonderfil thread very recently for the first time, their Konfetti 50wt Egyptian cotton. It is heavier than the 50wt Aurifil I am used to using, but I actually really really liked it for machine quilting. I don’t think I’d use it for piecing because I do love how fine the Aurifil is, but I may have found my new favourite machine quilting thread in the Wonderfil. And it’s very reasonably priced at a local shop, so double yay!

I love your Scrappy Trip. The colors are fun. I just finished on too! It was fun and fast and now I am afraid addicting. I have gone through my stash of Jelly Rolls to decided which one is next!

It looks dreamy! I know I’ve said that before. 🙂
I decided to try some hand quilting on my Madrona Road challenge, and looked up retailers in my area that sell the Spagetti…turns out, the only one within an hour’s drive is the one shop I refuse to shop at because of how they treated me after January’s long arm debacle. Blergh. Maybe…maybe…maybe…

I have actually never sewn with voile, and am not particularly familiar with it, but I admit to being “voile curious.” The quilt looks great and I love the addition of the hand quilting. A really lovely touch. I’ve so far avoided the scrappy trip along trend, but it seems like it would be such a rewarding project!

Love your scrappy voile Trip Around the World! It looks so soft in color! Congrats on doing such a great job on it. It has me inspired to attempt one. P.S. I love the pop up social buttons at the end of your page. A friend of mine has them on her site as well.

It must be so soft and snuggly! And I love the colors! I have made a couple of quilts using mostly Kaffe’s shot cotton and they come out extra squishy, too. The fabric is very fine. I have some voiles too, waiting patiently for their turn to go under the knife.
    Thanks for sharing this lovely!
