Sew, Mama, Sew Giveaway Day!

3 Dec

I’m having a giveaway this week in conjunction with Sew, Mama, Sew’s big giveaway day!

If this is your first time stopping by my blog, welcome!  Please take a moment to look around.  I’m Janice and I live in Los Angeles with my husband and two toddlers.  I love to modern quilt, and design and sew items for my home and my children.

If you like what you see, please take a moment to follow my blog either by RSS, email or on Facebook.  You can also find me on instagram as “Betteroffthread”.

Today I am giving away a fat quarter bundle of texty fabrics.  Have you caught the text bug yet?  I sure have! This is a selection of 6 fat quarters (pictured above and below) that will get you started in all your text endeavors.

To enter to win, please leave a comment (you can tell me a go-to dinner you like to make on weeknights if you like…help a busy mom out!)

Giveaway is open until December 7th at 5pm PST and I will choose a winner by random number generator on December 8th.  International entrants are welcome!

Good luck to all!

My go-to dinner is stirfry with some ramen noodles. Super easy with frozen veggies even and a block of tofu or a sliced chicken breast. (Even easier if I can get my husband to do it. I just keep telling him how amazing his stirfry is. Flattery gets you everywhere!)

Also, it is difficult to see where to type the information into your comment fields. I don’t know if you can add a border or something. I’d hate to have you miss commenters. 🙂

I like taco casserole. Place fritos on the bottom of a casserole dish top with seasoned hamburger (we use taco bell mild taco sauce), cheese and black olives. (you can use refried beans if you like those) Bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until it’s hot. Serve with tomatoes, lettuce, and sour cream on the side. The kids usually eat it without the extras. Super easy and it’s not just a taco!

I make leftover bacon sandwiches. Chop some bacon, sautee with favorite seasonings (salt, pepper, and dried jalapenos in our house), add leftovers (chicken, turkey, roast beef, etc). Scoop onto toasted bread and cheese. Delicious and easy. I don’t know about kid friendly though…. Just me and my husband – hence the jalapenos. 😀

I like to boil some pasta, use a good jarred sauce, and brown up some meat. That way we have a quick spaghetti dinner in about 20-30 ish minutes total. I typically doctor up the sauce and if I’m feeling especially healthy I’ll steam a side of veggies in the microwave!

My husband and I like to make chili in our crock pot – brown the meat (beef or turkey) and open the cans: two of chili beans, one diced tomatos, one pureed tomatos, and to make it really easy, buy frozen seasoning blend (diced onions, celery and peppers) and throw that it. Season to your taste – eay! We like to serve it with tortilla chips, shredded cheddar and sour cream. Makes me hungry! Thanks for the give away.

My go to quick week-night meal has to be what we call Hodge-Podge. It’s Mac-n-Cheese with ground beef and mixed veggies. Mix it all together and you got yourself a satisfying meal both the hubs and kiddos will love. Another great plus about this meal…it will easily last a couple nights. We always have leftovers.

My go to simple, easy dinner that is always a crowd pleaser for my 3 guys is French Bread or naan bread pizza. It is as simple as it sounds. cut your loaf in half or use the naan bread, spread with your fav sauce or any in the fridge and top with your fave topping or any leftovers that seem appealing, then top with your fav cheese, and bake on 350 until all the cheese is melted and bread is crispy.:) Yum!! My personal fav is feta cheese with bacon chuncks and chives on naan bread. oh now I am hungry. LOL Wishing you happy holidays and thank you for a chance to win!

First of all anything in the crockpot. I also like to make an oven stouffer (chicken), then the next day you can chunk up some and add it to some veggies and fettuccine, for chicken fettuccine. Then last but not least put the rest in a pot of water and cook until the chicken almost falls off the bone and make soup. It’s all perfect for this time of year. ;-> Toni Anne

I like Taco-Stuffed Shells as a go-to. Brown 2lbs ground beef, add two envelopes taco seasoning mix and water. I also add some canned corn (you can do beans too). Let cool. Cook shells to al dente and drain, lay out on parchment paper to cool individually. Stuff cooled shells with taco meat mixture. Put a cup of salsa in a roasting pan, add stuffed shells and cover with 1 cup taco sauce. You can also add some sliced olives or green onions at this time too. Bake at 350 degrees for 1/2 hour. Add 2 cups shredded taco cheese and crushed tortilla chips about 10 minutes before done.

I have a couple of go-to dinner’s. One is salad with grilled shrimp. Frozen shrimp is so quick to thaw with just some cold water, so I always have it on hand. I also do roasted broccoli and/or cauliflower from frozen bags in a pinch. It takes about 45 minutes to roast with a little EVOO and salt, but tastes so yummy. A gold ol’ omelet is always a good dinner idea using whatever leftover veggies are around.

Every time I make chili or spaghetti sauce, I make a ton and freeze it in mason jars. So that ends up being a quick, go-to. My son also loves pesto and I do the same- make a ton and freeze it in smaller containers. He loves pesto pizza and pasta. Use pesto sauce instead of reg pizza sauce. I buy the pizza dough at trader joes. My son also loves cornflake chicken- buy chicken tenders, soak them in buttermilk, salt, and pepper. Coat with crushed corn flakes and bake until crispy.

we frequently make chicken teriyaki or something. It’s the sauce that is incredible and you can use it on pork or whatever you’ve got. It’s 1 C. soy sauce, 1 C. brown sugar, 1 tablespoon garlic, 1 tablespoon oil, and then add as much fresh or powdered ginger as you like and 1/4 cup red wine vinegar and stir. it’s so good! And I’m seriously crossing all my extremities to win this bundle! drooling! Thanks for an awesome blog and giveaway!!

good day!!! and great fabrics!!! i just moved from the left coast with my husband , to the right coast!! we lived in Atwater and do miss the weather, but family comes first…have you discovered the crockpot yet? it saved e more than once when my children were small/teenagers and that with a bread making machine were my best friends. more often than not i would work until 6-7pm and would be waaay tired. it was nice coming home to a nice meal. all i asked of the children was to fix a tossed salad and set the table for dinner…made for a much happier mommy and daddy!!

They liked having lots of different bits, nothing fancy, just pasta and bits of cheese and meat, some fruit and veggies, things like that. Now our go to is probably ramen with stir-fried vegetables, and we like to use the crockpot too but that usually means I have to be on the ball earlier in the day! 🙂

My really easy dinner is carbonara. While the pasta’s cooking, either cook then chop some bacon or just chop some ham (depending on what you’ve got/how much time you have), then beat one egg yolk per person, plus an extra, or one whole egg per person with grated cheese and black pepper. Drain the pasta, return to the pan, stir in the bacon and eggy mixture, and stir continuously over a low heat for just long enough for the egg not to be raw. Not especially healthy, but the entire thing takes 15 minues to do, even with cooking bacon for it. Alternatively, more of a British thing, so you may not have come across it, but baked beans and grated cheese on toast is so fast and simple. I always think I should do that more often. Thanks for a lovely giveaway – I love those prints.

I love to bake salmon. Put in a pan (either steaks or fillets), shake a little tarragon on top, cover, bake 20-30 minutes depending on thickness of fish. Meanwhile, you can steam veggies, bake a potato, make a salad etc. When my kids were little I used to make tuna casserole for them and salmon for myself until they started eating more of my salmon than their casserole, so out went the tuna casserole, I can’t stand it bu they used to love it.

Once the chicken in browned use Vigo yellow rice mix, follow directions on package. I add it all directly to the chicen in the deep pot so it’s a one pot meal. After the rice has cooked about 2o minutes add peas or serve on the side. My family loves it!

Lauren, hope I’m not screwing up the draw by replying to you, but we’ve been having this for years and years. We don’t eat rice anymore, but it used to be a weekly dinner. Have him try black beans, brown rice, a little shredded cheese, sour cream, and mushrooms cooked in some Worcestershire, with some black pepper. When you’re used to that, add some Srirachi (just a tiny bit!).

Pork in the crock pot always goes over well at my house! I put about 1/2 cup (or less) of apple juice in the crock pot with a boneless pork loin roast and sprinkle garlic, black pepper, oregano, and chili powder on top, plus a squirt or two of honey just for fun. Then I add carrots and potatoes about 2-3 hours before the pork is done so they get cooked but not mushy. So yummy!

Easy Peasy Baked Ziti: Cook 1 pound of ziti (you can also use Penne) brown 1/2 pound Italian sausage and 1/2 lb ground round together. Drain and place in a large bowl. Add 1 small jar of Alfredo sauce and 1 small jar of marinara sauce. Add cooked Ziti and mix. Pour everything into a 13 x 9 and cover with mozzarella. Bake for 15 mins or until cheese is melted. It is so yummy and EASY!!!!!

Baked Chicken: Turn oven to 425 degrees. Melt 1/4 cup butter/veggie oil in the oven in a baking pan. Dip the chicken pieces into seasoned flour, and put skin-side down in the oven pan. Wash baking potatoes, and poke here and there; put them in oven. Set oven for 1/2 hour. Turn chicken pieces over and bake for another half hour. The fun aspect to this meal is that it cooks while you are doing something else! We sometimes serve chilled cranberry sauce instead of a veggie, or a quick salad.

I like breakfast for dinner, and those are always quick meals! One favourite is to cook up some potatoes (sliced fairly thin, then fried in a little oil until they start to brown, then pour a bit of chicken broth over them – maybe a quarter cup per 4 oz potato, cover and cook until the broth cooks away and the potatoes are tender – it doesn’t take long) and some scrambled eggs and some minute steak or sliced up stirfry beef (something thing that cooks quickly) with a bit of salt and pepper. I usually eat mine with the steak atop the eggs and a big spoonful of salsa on top of that. Yum.

Add a bit of lemon juice and capers at the end. At the same time boil some spaghetti noodles. Heat some olive oil in a pan with some garlic and red pepper flakes. Toss the noodles with the oil mixture. Done! Lots of recipes online for these if you want specifics!

Black bean and egg burritos – scramble some eggs, heat a can of black beans on the stove (or in a bowl in the microwave if you’re really pressed for time) and eat on flour tortillas with shredded cheese and salsa. (if you have an extra 5 min – saute some onions in the pan before you add the black beans!

At weeknights I usually prepare some quick stirfry, with rice or ramen noodles, it’s fast and easy and everything that needs to be used gets out of the fridge.
Ramen noodles also make delicious soups with chicken broth and sliced veggies (peppers, cucumber, onion, peas) in them.
My kids prefer fish fingers, though. ^^ Still having to grow my gourmets. 🙂

Thanks for offering this lovely giveaway, the fabrics are so cute.

    What a great giveaway!
My quick dinner when we’re running around with after school (and work!) clubs is a veggie pasta bake – I chop vegetables quite small in the food processor (one type at a time) and as they’re done cook them down in a little oil for about 5 minutes, then add tinned chopped tomatoes and cook for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile I cook pasta (usually penne) until just underdone, drain and mix the two together. Place in an oven proof dish and top with grated cheese (usually cheddar, sometimes add some parmesan too) and bake in a medium oven for about another 20 minutes. Alway use onions, carrots and bell peppers and then add other veg depending on how I feel. the great thing is I can do the first part and then put in the oven to bake later. I have found it is also ok if I make it the night before and then bake the following day. Has increased the range of vegetables my veggie hating son eats!

    Make-ahead chicken casserole:
Layer in casserole dish – 2 cups uncooked spiral noodles, 2 cups chopped up cooked chicken (I throw chicken breasts frozen into the oven at 375 for 45 mins), half cup chopped celery, 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese. Then make a mixture of one can cream of mushroom soup, refill empty can with milk, one can chicken broth (I use the powder with boiling water), some spices – I use a heaping Tbsp of Epicure`s three onion. Pour mixture on top of cheese and use a fork to make sure it gets distributed all the way to bottom and soaks all the noodles. You can then put this in the fridge until ready to cook, as far as the night before. Cook at 350 for one hour. This is my `go to` meal for new Moms – I make one for them and one for me at the same time.

Just mix up two packages of Kraft Mac & Cheese, then add some bread crumbs, sour cream, shredded cheese (I use jack or sharp cheddar), and your meat of choice (we usually go with chopped ham, chicken, or tuna). Top with more bread crumbs and shredded cheese and bake at 350 degrees until the top is melted and golden brown. Enjoy!

I love the texty fabrics, but haven’t been able to get my hands on any yet. And go-to dinners…well, I always like having a big bowl of salad in the fridge; you can just toss whatever you have on top of it and have that (ie. meats, beans/tortilla chips, nuts, things like that.
I also like making large batches of things and then freezing portions of them. Then, a little bit before dinner, you can heat them up, maybe add a side and you are good. Soups work well with this, meats, even enchiladas and pie dough.

Cook a packet of your favourite pasta and put it in the pasta dish. Cut up 3 chicken breasts and broiled in the microwave, place in the bottom of a casserole dish, on top of the pasta. Add a cup of frozen peas, corns and carrots over chicken. Pour a can of condensed cream of chicken (and corn – if you like this) soup over the whole lot. The n add breadcrumbs and grated cheese to the top and bake for 25-35 minutes (until the top is really crispy and the soup is sort of bubbling). EAT!! Takes about 45 minutes from start to finish as long as you preheat the oven – and if you make double, you can freeze the other half – just don’t put it in the oven!

I love the text fabrics. Thanks for a chance to win. Go to dinner lately, slice into rounds, turkey sausage (already cooked), cut up red potatoes, onions, broccoli, mushrooms and any other veggie you like. Throw on a cookie sheet, season, put a couple of tablespoons of olive oil on it. Mix up olive oil so it coats lightly all the meat, potatoes and veggies, Roast at 400 degrees for about 30 min or potatoes are tender. Really quick and yummy.

Well this is not a go to meal for the whole family – your husband might complain, but when my kids were toddlers this was my healthy go to meal. BUTTERNUT SQUASH FRITTERS. I’ll even give you the recipe!
1 cup butternut squash – cooked & mashed
    1/4 cup flour
    1 tsp baking flour
    pinch of salt
    1/2 tsp of cinnamon
    1 tbsp sugar
    1 egg – beaten
(Milk if the batter seems to stiff, but usually not needed)
Whip the whole lot up in a bowl. Heat a frying pan – ideally a teflon one. Wipe pan with vegetable oil on a paper towel. Drop teaspoonfuls of batter into the pan and cook like pancakes. Allow to cool a little then serve up to small pudgy fingers! You can also sprinkle these with a little berry sugar & cinnamon. But try them on the kids without first because once you’ve crossed the line with sugar sprinkles, there’s no going back!
Incidently I love the fabric in your giveaway. So thanks for the chance to win. And if you’re a text fabric junkie check out the giveaway on my blog. (not on the sewmamasew list as I wasn’t organized on time) It’s for Improv text fabric which I will design with all the words sent in. See you on Instagram!

fav go-to weeknight meal: pasta with veggie sauce. it’s my son’s favourite. I saute onions, garlic, and some kind of veggie-usually frozen zucchini slices or peppers, add in a can of rinsed/drained great northern white beans. Then add a can of tomato product-either puree, crushed, chopped, or sauce-but the cans, not a jar. My son likes the taste of what I make with the cans better than pre-flavoured stuff. Add some thyme, oregano, parsley, etc…pepper, salt. And done. Of course, this is all done while the pasta is cooking. Apart from slicing the onion and using the garlic press, it’s pretty quick and easy. Dinner in 30 minutes or less!

Goat milk is often consumed by young children, the elderly, those who are ill, or have a low tolerance to cow’s milk. Goat milk is more similar to human milk than that of the cow, although there is large variation among breeds in both animals. Although the West has popularized the cow, goat milk and goat cheese are preferred dairy products in much of the rest of the world. Because goat cheese is often made in areas where refrigeration is limited, aged goat cheeses are often heavily treated with salt to prevent decay. As a result, salt has become associated with the flavor of goat cheese.-

Hamburgers are usually a feature of fast food restaurants. The hamburgers served in major fast food establishments are usually mass-produced in factories and frozen for delivery to the site. These hamburgers are thin and of uniform thickness, differing from the traditional American hamburger prepared in homes and conventional restaurants, which is thicker and prepared by hand from ground beef. ^
