Traveling PicStitch Blog Hop

22 Nov

It’s finally my day in the Traveling PicStitch Blog Hop and I want to wish everyone in the USA a very Happy Thanksgiving! I hope your tummies are full of turkey and apple pie while you spend the day with family and friends.

I’ve done a lot of traveling in my life, but I decided to pick a photo that was closer to home.  My family and I spent the last 2.5 years living in beautiful Sonoma County, Ca.  We just moved back to Los Angeles in October and the last couple years feel like they were a beautiful, refreshing break from all the LA traffic and smog.  We were very happy to be able to squeeze in one last year of Sonoma County Fall and there is a very good reason why…

Here is a pumpkin patch in Sonoma County:

And here is a pumpkin patch in Los Angeles:

Okay, okay, I am exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea!

Our very favorite pumpkin patch is just outside Petaluma (where we lived) and it’s called Peter Pumpkin Patch.

I really don’t think there is a more sincere pumpkin patch to be found.  The original farmhouse is from 1877 and it was purchased as a kit from the Sears-Roebuck Catalogue.  The pumpkins also actually grow right there on the farm as opposed to being shipped in (fancy that).

For my color palette, I chose this snapshot of my kids in front of an antique car:

I had a palette builder choose colors:

And these were the fabrics I chose to go along with the colors:

I am a huge fan of curves and I fell in love with the museum medallion when I saw it, so I decided to try one myself. It is based on a 19th century quilt that is on display at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont.

I drafted the pattern in photoshop and then printed it onto cardstock.  I prefer to use cardstock for my English Paper-piecing, so I can get nice, sharp edges.  I cut all the fabrics for the curves on the bias, and that helped them to conform more easily.

A view from the back.

I’m still deciding if I want to make something smaller, like a pillow, or keep going and make my own museum medallion quilt.

Love this post! The LA pumpkin patch made me laugh!
What a great picture and fantastic palette. The block is gorgeous and truly would look wonderful as a cushion or the start of a quilt!
