Quilts for Fire Victims

4 Sep

Larger Phoenix Quilt Logo

I am always impressed and touched by the compassion and giving nature of the quilting community.  This past year, I’ve been trying to make an effort to donate quilts to auctions, charity and give sewing time to friends in need.  Not only does it feel good to give, but I love quilting and I want to share that joy with other people.

Julie Anderson at “Phoenix Quilts” is leading a charity effort right now to provide a quilt to every family in the Western United States who has lost their home in a fire this summer.  That is 937 homes and displaced families so far!  This touches very close to the heart for me, because I have had friends and relatives evacuated from their homes due to fire.  I’ve also had fires very close to my own home in Southern California and I can’t imagine the pain of losing everything.  Mementos can’t be replaced, but we can do our part to wrap these families in the love of a handmade quilt.

If you are interested in helping with the effort, Julie is accepting lap-sized or larger quilts.  She also needs help in each state to keep track of families who have lost their homes.  Maybe you don’t have time to start a new quilt, but we all have unfinished blocks and quilt tops laying around.  This is the perfect opportunity to finish them up and pay it forward!

Thanks for writing this post about what Phoenix Quilts is doing! Quilters are the most amazing, generous group of people I’ve ever known! 🙂
