I put the “Geese in the Forest” Quilt aside for a tiny bit because I had an idea for an i-spy quilt running through my brain. I have tons of novelty squares that I won from a giveaway on Megan’s blog and I am supplementing with some of my own. I will admit, most novelty prints are traditional and aren’t quite my style, so I wanted to find a way to make the prints feel more modern. I decided to do “squares in squares” with a coordinating polka dot fabric around each picture to frame it.
The blocks are all improvized and I am not sure exactly how they will all come together as a quilt yet.
Option One. I could sash the blocks in white:
Option two. No sashing at all:
I am really torn. I really like option one with the sashing, but I also want to fit a lot of different pictures on the quilt for Liam to “spy”. This is one quilt that doesn’t need to be done for quite awhile, so I think I’ll just keep amassing squares and figure it out later. Suggestions are always welcome!
What about skinny sashing (1/4″ wide) I absolutely love it – it separates colours but would still leave you tons of room for pictures for Liam. If he’s going to sit on it, you could also add tags and bit hanging off it (which you could snip off later if they go on your nerves) and little flaps where more pictures were hidden underneath.
I actually like the second option best. Love the colors all smashed up next to each other, and I think it’s more dynamic.
I prefer the no sashing option too! I think it will make a more interesting i-spy quilt.
I like the second option aslo. I think it looks great! Love your blocks 🙂
I agree — I like option #2 the best!
I agree – option Number 2 feels more dynamic to me. By the way – I love your idea of putting a modern I Spy Quilt together!
Normally, I love lots of white, but it is so fun with all the colors all smashed up together. And I totally agree about getting as many items to spy in there as possible.
I usually like lots of white sashing too but for a kid’s quilt I love the idea of all the colours together so I vote for number 2
I love #2! so cute with the colors all together. plus you still have your white in the middle of the blocks. i asked my 6 and 3 year old boys which one they liked, and they picked the second one too!
I like it without the sashing. It has pizazz!
Guess I’m the odd one, I like the white sashing. You focus on the fabrics more.
I found you from Oh Frasson’s Flickr group. This is totally cute. I need to make one for one of my little guys. I have too many ideas in my head and too many projects going on now!!! 🙂
I like the idea of a skinny border around them and maybe in a dark color, not white? I dunno. I found that looking at the one w/o any border my eyes were caught by all the polka dots and not the motifs. And the white was too wide and white to me. All that is for what it’s worth which is probably nothing! HA!
Number two for me too! Totally fabulous without the sashing and the spotty background fabrics give it cohesion. And with kids quilts – you definitely don’t want too much white with those grubby fingers pointing to all the fabulous “I spy” fabrics!!
Well done – I love this!
I really like it w/o sashing. super cute.
gonna peek in my stash to see if i have any fun i-spy stuff to send!
