Bloggers Quilt Festival

10 Oct

Amy at Park City Girl is hosting a Fall Quilt Festival and I thought I would participate!  Although I have been sewing forever and have an MFA in Costume Design, I am brand new to the quilting world.  So many wonderful quilts and blogs are being showcased on Amy’s blog, so I was a little hesitant, but I figured I should get my feet wet.

I haven’t made many quilts yet, since I just started quilting in the summer, but I would have to say that my Vintage Scrappy Quilt is my very favorite (Liam’s stacked coin quilt is a close second).

I followed Oh Fransson’s Mod Sampler Quilt Along and I enjoyed quilting along with the flickr group (though I started my  quilt late!).

I used a mix of vintage bed linens and modern fabrics, so finding the fabric was also a lot of fun. I think I went to every Goodwill, Salvation Army and Thrift Store in the area scouring for vintage bed linens.

I think my attraction for them is that they remind me of my childhood, waking up on a sunny Saturday morning to hear my mom singing downstairs.  I had a canopy bed and I remember laying in bed staring at the sherbert colored paid fabric hanging over my bed.  I  completely forgot what it looked like until I received a scrap bag of linens and lo and behind, there was a scrap of the exact linens that were on my bed! They are not in my quilt, though, because I couldn’t bear to cut the scrap up.  I’ll save it for a quilt that uses larger pieces.

I love the vintage bed sheet I found for the back, also:

Hopefully for the next quilt festival I will have a whole new selection of quilts to choose from!

Thanks for hosting the festival, Amy!

Love this — especially the hardwood floors & grassy back yard backgrounds! Those are often my photo backdrops too!

Your quilt is lovely! Sherbet colors is a perfect description of the colors.

I like your quilt and the story of the vintage bed linens. Such a clever idea! Was it difficult to quilt on the sheeting fabric? Did you had quilt this or machine quilt. I’m curious because I once wanted to use sheeting for a back and was told it would be difficult to quilt. So I used a different backing. Would be interested to know of your experience. ~ Sarah

I think you did a beautiful job! I love all of the colours you used and the fact that you repurposed scraps and vintage sheets! I am pretty new to quilting too (I’ve shown my first two quilts in my Festival post), and I think it’s lovely to have this venue to share our quilts and to learn more from the experienced quilters who are also showing.

I really like this one! I have a portion of a sheet that coordinates with your border printed sheet on the back.

thanks everyone! Sarah, I didn’t have any issues quilting the vintage linens. Some of them are quite thin and wonky, so I had to take extra care when lining up seams and trimming edges. I also used white batting instead of off white, since it could show through the thin fabric.
I machine quilted it with a free motion foot.

Wow, I really love this. I want to eventually make the mod sampler. I, too, love working with vintage linens. The quilt I put in the festival is also a mixture of old and new prints. I really think vintage linens make the best quilts!!

It’s always amazing what stirs up a memory. I’d have a hard time cutting into old linens from my childhood too! My sister and I had matching sheets with poppies, and my mom painted a yellow brick road and Emerald City on our bedroom wall. I love your quilts and the pieced backing is wonderful. Thanks for sharing your quilt’s story.
