Hemming Jeans

19 Oct

Kick your tailor to the curb and hem jeans yourself!

Kick your tailor to the curb and hem jeans yourself!

If you aren’t 5’11” you will appreciate this little tutorial.  Women’s jeans nowadays seem to come in one length: Supermodel long.  If you cut the bottom off and hem them traditionally, you loose all that funky stitching and distressing.  Lets face it, a pair of badly hemmed jeans screams fashion victim.

Simply follow these easy steps from DaciaRay and you can alter your own jeans with confidence.

A few extra tips:

-Wash your jeans a few times, so they do not shrink up on you!

-It helps to have a full-length mirror and a friend to pin the hem for you.

-Remember the seamstress motto: “Measure twice, cut once.”

-You can also cut the extra fabric off the inside of the jeans, so you don’t have to worry about it flopping around.  Leave a 5/8″ seam allowance and zigzag the raw edge to prevent fraying.

Oooh! I so needed this! I finally broke down an paid a seamstress to hem my Chip and Pepper’s, and now I’ll only be able to wear them for a couple of more months b/c I’m pregnant.

Right now I have two size twelve jeans for my second trimester, but I”m growing out not longer, so of course I’m going to have to hem them. But I don’t want to pay a ton of money to hem $30 jeans that I’m (hopefully) going to use for only a few months, so this is going to come in totally handy.

Though, don’t be surprised if I call, asking for step-by-step guidance.
