I am very excited to announce that I am hosting a quilt-along with Melissa from Melia Mae Quilting! She contacted me about doing a quilt-along and when I saw what we would be making, I HAD to say yes! This is the first time either of us are hosting a quilt-along, so we are figuring it all out together (be gentle on us!).
We will be making an adorable advent calendar by Elizabeth Hartman from Oh, Fransson!, which you can find here. It is a free tutorial on Sew Mama Sew’s website. Please go see this website to get the PDF instructions so you can follow along. I have had this pattern on my to do list since 2009 and each year other projects get in the way. My kids are finally just old enough to appreciate an advent calendar, so I’m excited to finally make this one.
Melissa had the great idea of making this quilt-along slow-paced, so that people can fit it in around work, family and other obligations that get in the way of sewing. It’s perfect for the busy, the over-worked and those new to quilting and want to start with a small project. We’ll begin early and work slow. By the end of November, you’ll have a brand spanking new and handmade Advent Calendar, ready for the holiday season.
The schedule is as follows:
- August 19th – Announcement of Giveaway and sponsors
- September 2nd – Quilt Along begins: Choosing fabrics and fabric requirements
- September 16th – Cutting and layout variations
- September 30th – Applique techniques (machine, hand, puff-paint, ironed on). The options are endless for how you would like to add your numbers to the pockets.
- October 14th – Piecing
- October 28th – Quilting ideas
- November 11th – Binding
- November 25th – The Big Reveal and ideas for what to put in the pockets.
On each of these dates, both Melissa and I will have link-ups on our blogs for everyone to show their progress along the way. It is always fun to see how everyone else is coming along and their “interpretations” of the project! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send Melissa or me an email. Be sure to join the “Countdown to Christmas Quilt-Along” Flickr group and add the button to your blog sidebar to help get the word outAt the end of the Quilt Along we will have prizes for those who link up to “The Big Reveal”. Four random winners will be chosen to win the following prizes.

I looked up the pattern last night to look up what you were making on Instagram and knew that I wanted to make one this year! So excited to sew along 🙂

Will sit this one out because I made this last year, but it sounds like a fun thing to do as a quilt-along. Just a note about the instructions: They don’t actually say that when tracing the numbers onto the fusible paper, they need to be reversed. Just a little something that might make a massive difference to the outcome ;). Luckily I caught on before I started cutting…

Anyone else having trouble getting the button to work?? It looks like a great QAL but I am having trouble helping to get the word out ATM…

Now you’ve got me thinking about making a Yule advent calendar (only goes to 21). I’ve got a quilted Christmas tree wall decoration my mom made when I was little, so it’s a officially vintage now. 🙂 Just need to figure out how to add little number tags or decorations. I started down the Pinterest hole, then reminded myself it’s August!

This looks really fun. I’ve been meaning to make one of these for years! I’m just a beginner quilter, but I think I may be able to pull this off.

I joined up this morning! Looks like fun!

Hmm I may have to join in on this one. This may be your first to organize a QAL but it will be my first to join in with a QAL. It looks so fun and festive! Will help to put me in the Christmas spirit. 🙂

This looks like fun, I am excited.

Hey there would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re using?
I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a difficult time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution
and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems
different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.
P.S Apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
