Wendy and I have been best friends since we were teenagers (ok, SHE was a teenager and I was a wee bit older). We were roommates at Penn State, lived in Pittsburgh together, made the big move to Los Angeles, married 5 months apart, had baby boys 6 months apart and baby girls 2 months apart. We’ve been very fortunate to have both our lives be in sync for so long.
One of the first quilts I ever made was for her son, Ben. The poor boy actually deserves a bigger quilt from me, because it is a teeny-tiny stroller quilt and he’s a big 3 year-old now.
When Wendy told me she was having a baby girl, I got right to work on quilt for her.
Wendy is a sucker for all things tiffany blue, sleek modern lines and Audrey Hepburn. When I saw VeryKerryBerry’s Wonky Circle of Stars Quilt, I thought it was the perfect mix of classic (the stars), simple (lots of negative space) and modern (the wonkiness). I dug into my stash of aquas and greys for the palette.
I used Free Spirit “Arctic White” for the background and it is SOOOOO soft. If you have never touched Free Spirit solids, please do yourself a favor and check them out (and no, I am not being compensated for anything I plug on this blog).
The backing is Bliss Flannel (also so soft!) “Party Polka Dot” in Robin’s Egg Blue. I am in love with the binding which is Riley Blake “Sweet Divinity”. Just a touch of pink and red to give a little feminine flair.
I tried doing swirls in the quilting, but keep in mind that I was about 9 months pregnant when I quilted it. I was working fast and there was a BIG belly in my way!
I hope Elle spends many happy hours snuggling with her quilt!
I’m linking up with Fabric Tuesday at “Quilt Story” and with TGIFF at “Blossom Heart Quilts”
