It’s week one of the Countdown To Christmas Quilt-along! If you haven’t heard about it, Melissa from Melia Mae Quilting and I are making Oh Fransson’s adorable Advent Calendar. You can find the pattern here and the details to our quilt-along here.
The schedule is:
- September 2nd – Quilt Along begins: Choosing fabrics and fabric requirements
- September 16th – Cutting and layout variations
- September 30th – Applique techniques (machine, hand, puff-paint, ironed on). The options are endless for how you would like to add your numbers to the pockets.
- October 14th – Piecing
- October 28th – Quilting ideas
- November 11th – Binding
- November 25th – The Big Reveal and ideas for what to put in the pockets.
This week we are choosing our fabrics. Please refer to the pattern (linked above) for the fabric requirements.
I am so excited for my calendar and my kids are already talking about it. I decided to make my calendar fussy cut and scrappy. Above are twenty-four 4.5″ squares (one for each pocket) of fabrics by Heather Ross, Aneela Hooey, Ariel Eldridge & Riley Blake.
The advent calendar will match these scrappy stockings that I made for the kids two years ago.
I also chose some coordinating solids from my stash: Medium Green, Chartreuse, Red and Robin’s Egg Blue.

Robert Kaufman has “Holiday Sweet Tweets” by Laurie Wisbrun and “Retro Christmas” by Cynthia Frenette.
Sew Modern has a great selection of Holiday Fabrics, including “Winterkist” by Monica Solorio-Snow on sale.

Are you ready for our first link-up? We would LOVE to see what fabrics you are choosing, so please link-up below anytime in the next week. Don’t worry, if you miss this one, we’ll have another in two weeks, so you can share with everyone then. You do not have to have a blog to participate, you may also share a photo from your flickr account (and please join the Countdown to Christmas flickr group).
I’m excited to see what everyone chooses!
Also, be sure to stop by Melissa’s blog and check out her fabric choices.

Oh yay! I have some Flurry by Kate Spain left over from a couple of years ago and this looks like the perfect project to use up those scraps. Have printed out the tutorial and am ready to go!

Finally a good way to use some of the vintage Christmas fabrics I have been given. You see, I come from a long line of fabric stockpilers.
Martina says
Thanks so much for doing this. Just added my fabric choice. Will be a bit different, but really look forwar to this QAL.

Just ordered my fabric. I’m getting Merry Little Christmas charms by Riley Blake. After I receive them I need to pick up some coordinating solids.
LOVE your fabrics!! I wish I had a selection like that in my stash to mixy-match for this.
