Adding to the stash

Hello, my name is Janice, and I’m a fabricaholic.

I haven’t been able to quilt for the last 6 weeks, but I can certainly online shop while the baby is eating and sleeping (he still won’t usually take naps unless he is ON me, but we are working on that).  Needless to say, this is making a small dent in my bank account, but at least I am finally building a small stash, since I haven’t been able to use any of the fabric I am buying. Liam and I even went down to the LA fabric district yesterday to check out Michael Levine.  I could have stayed and explored that fabric store for hours!  I had to stay on Liam’s schedule though.  He was not quite as impressed and slept the entire time.

Once I can figure out how to sew like this, I will be golden:

Liam is enjoying all the things mommy made for him.  Here he is on the Superman Blanket looking like a charming little boy.  Where did my tiny newborn baby go??

Bloggers Quilt Festival

Amy at Park City Girl is hosting a Fall Quilt Festival and I thought I would participate!  Although I have been sewing forever and have an MFA in Costume Design, I am brand new to the quilting world.  So many wonderful quilts and blogs are being showcased on Amy’s blog, so I was a little hesitant, but I figured I should get my feet wet.

I haven’t made many quilts yet, since I just started quilting in the summer, but I would have to say that my Vintage Scrappy Quilt is my very favorite (Liam’s stacked coin quilt is a close second).

I followed Oh Fransson’s Mod Sampler Quilt Along and I enjoyed quilting along with the flickr group (though I started my  quilt late!).

I used a mix of vintage bed linens and modern fabrics, so finding the fabric was also a lot of fun. I think I went to every Goodwill, Salvation Army and Thrift Store in the area scouring for vintage bed linens.

I think my attraction for them is that they remind me of my childhood, waking up on a sunny Saturday morning to hear my mom singing downstairs.  I had a canopy bed and I remember laying in bed staring at the sherbert colored paid fabric hanging over my bed.  I  completely forgot what it looked like until I received a scrap bag of linens and lo and behind, there was a scrap of the exact linens that were on my bed! They are not in my quilt, though, because I couldn’t bear to cut the scrap up.  I’ll save it for a quilt that uses larger pieces.

I love the vintage bed sheet I found for the back, also:

Hopefully for the next quilt festival I will have a whole new selection of quilts to choose from!

Thanks for hosting the festival, Amy!

I miss quilting:(

I am trapped on my big, overstuffed chair feeding/holding the baby pretty much 24/7, so while I can’t sew, I can surf the net and oogle fabric and other quilter’s projects online.  I broke down and bought some 1/2 yards of the Sheri Berry Holiday fabric along with some fabric from Moda’s Figgy Pudding line.  I can’t wait til they arrive!

I will have quite a stash of Christmas Fabrics, so I need projects to go with them!  One is the Advent Calendar from Sew, Mama, Sew.  I also came across this great idea for a Christmas Tree Skirt done two different ways:

Quilted Tree skirt from Film in the Fridge.

Quilted tree skirt from Sew, Mama, Sew

Both blogs have a link to tutorials, so you can make your own!

Someday I would really love to try the Trees For Sale quilt pattern by Sandy Gervais.  I saw this version by Not Your Run of the Mill and I have to say I love it even more than the original:

The Figgy Pudding tree print really complements the pattern and I can’t wait to see the finished product!

I have only made quilts with squares and strips, so this would be something new for me to try.

Speaking of new, here is a quilt by Red Pepper Quilts with triangles that I will be saving in my inspiration folder.  You all know how I adore projects that utilize scraps and this one is a doozy!  I cut most of my scraps into strips for my string quilt, so I’ll have to start saving new scraps for this quilt:

Scrappy Star Block by Red Pepper Quilts

If you google “Half Square Triangle Blocks” you will find many tutorials on how to make them several different ways.  I plan to use this one.

The quilt is made up of 9 of these gorgeous blocks and I am excited to see how the quilt turns out!
